Orbs and the Paranormal

What do you know about orbs?

You know, those little balls of light that show up in your photos? They have a scene in my WiP, a novella called Second Death. What would you think, if you were walking through the cemetery at night (it could happen!) and all of a sudden these little balls of light, called orbs, show up and start swirling around you? What if they were hypnotic? What if....I'll stop there. I don't want to give away the scene yet because it plays an import role in Second Death. But you can see that the paranormal fiction writer can go in so many directions with this, especially if you write about ghosts, as I do.

Here's what some are saying about orbs.

Some claim orbs are the souls of spirits or ghosts. After death, these souls stay on because they're bound to their previous lives for some reason, almost like an obsession-they can't let go or have unfinished business. The premise is that they travel as an orb to conserve energy in their natural forms. They're not as fully developed as ghosts. Ghost hunters actually go out looking for orbs to photograph them - they are quite photogenic.

Scientists say they are particles of dust or water on the lense of your camera. Or maybe light reflecting off gnats or bugs in the air. But what about those orbs seen over swamps, bogs or marshes with the naked eye? What about in the winter time when gnats and bugs aren't flying around?

What do I think?

I have no idea what to think. I believe in ghosts and the afterlife. Why not? Too many people have experienced something supernatural to discount it, including me.

Anyway, at Christmastime I took a photo of my dogs. And so I pulled the photo out to check for orbs. Check it out:

There are at least a couple of orbs...

What do you think?
Do you believe in the supernatural?
Do orbs show up on your photos?

  1. I wouldn't discount them either. There are far too many things in this world that can not be explained by science and logic alone, no matter how hard we try.

    1. That's right, Angela. I mean, isn't God and angels and all that sort of supernatural. No proof, you just have to believe and go on faith.

  2. I've never seen orbs in my photo's, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. In fact I totally agree with Angela.

Must dig out some old photo's and look more carefully!

    1. Wendy, that's what I did. I pulled out some photos - they're all over! *shrugs*

  3. Orbs show up in every photo of one of my friends - no matter whose camera is used. The orb is always the same color, a bright green with a hint of teal. In size comparison, it's the size of baseball or sometimes a little larger. Her mother believes it's an angel. I tend to agree.

    1. Now isn't that weird, Carol? There is no explanation for it. But wouldn't that be so awesome if it was an angel?

    2. I think so, too. But why? My friend is a sweetie but as human as all of us. One of life's mysteries.

    3. You mean, why her and not us? Who knows? One day all will be revealed. I do believe, though, that you have to be open to that sort of thing. Which doesn't explain why some people, who don't want to, see things, lol!

  4. Orbs? In a cemetery at night? I'd be frozen with fear and that's probably where they'd find me dead the next morning. ;) Yeah the eye thing with animals can be spooky.

    1. LOL, Joy. I'd have to have a few and be with a group of friends to go through a cemetery at night! But it'd be scary-fun, though :)

  5. I've never seen one so to be honest I'm not sure I believe in them, but they sound cool. I'll stay open minded just in case :)

  6. It's fun to think about what orbs in photos could be. I don't discount anything. On one occasion, I've seen orbs, 3 to be exact, with my own eyes. I was a bit freaked at first, but after the incident, I was more intrigued than anything.

    1. Candilynn, I think I could handle seeing orbs in person. Just not ghosts, lol! But how interesting!

  7. I'm going to have with the scientific explanation, but I won't say supernatural orbs could never be possible. Now glowing eyes is a who different thing. Spooky!

Comments from ghouls, demons and angelic beings are nice. But we love hearing from the living most of all :-)
